Your piano is a highly specialist
purchase, and may be one of the largest investments you ever make.
It is important to have as much information as possible at your
disposal before making the final decision. At Winchester Piano Centre
we are committed to ensuring that the piano you choose is the right
one for you, and as an independent company are well placed to give
you impartial advice. If you are considering a substantial investment,
we can advise on the style and size
of piano which will best complement your room.

Overstrung or straight strung ?
When you first
begin looking for a piano, the words "
overstrung" and "
straight
strung" may mean very little. We always have a selection of
both in stock, but recommend that our customers opt for
overstrung
pianos when their budget permits, particularly those who are already
competent pianists.
Straight strung means that the strings all run vertically
inside the piano. This type of piano is generally older and therefore
less expensive - more suitable for beginners. Around the 1920's
pianos began to be manufactured differently -
overstrung.
This means that the treble and bass strings cross over each other
and is generally a sign of a better quality instrument. Even nowadays,
pianos are made in much the same way - all modern pianos are
overstrung.
Second-Hand Pianos
For some people, a family heirloom
restored to working order is their preferred choice. Whether you
have an old piano you would like restored or would like to buy a
reconditioned instrument, we can help.
Many people love to have antiques in their home, and several of
our reconditioned instruments fall into this category. We stock
pianos of all ages and styles, from the 19th century through to
post-war styles. We also offer second-hand modern pianos, so if
you prefer an up-to-date look but are on a tight budget, this may
be the best choice. Among our most popular models are second-hand
Japanese or Korean pianos such as Yamaha and Kawai. These are usually
first class instruments and, being only a few years old, are excellent
value for money. We try to keep several of these pianos in stock
at any time.
Restored pianos start from as little as £495 for a beginner's instrument,
up to several thousand for a top quality piano. There are of course
many options between these two extremes, so when you have an idea
of your budget, come and see us - we'll make sure you get the best
for your money.
New Pianos
Advantages of buying
a brand new piano include guaranteed workmanship and quality, as
well as choice of design and finish. We stock a superb range of
new upright and grand pianos. If the piano you require is not in stock,
we can order it for you, regardless of make, model or finish. A brand new upright piano could be yours for
as little as £1695. New baby grands (up to 5' long) start at around
£4995, with larger grands costing in the region of £5-25,000.

Of course, if money is no object, the sky's the limit! Manufacturers
are constantly developing and refining their models to keep
pace with increasing competition, so if nothing but the very
latest innovation will do, we can source it for you, direct
from the manufacturer at the lowest possible price. |
